Recent Publications

The Washington Map Society is very pleased to provide “Recent Publications”, a compendium of books and articles on cartography and cartographic subjects that was and is included in almost every issue of The Portolan. Here it is compiled in three separate files that span the years of The Portolan, which may be viewed on this website or downloaded. Recent Publications is a resource for anyone interested in maps, cartography, geography and related fields. With the passage of time, some of the materials cited may or may not be currently available, and any costs/prices noted were at the time of publication.

From 1984 to present, three very dedicated volunteers have produced the compendiums for the benefit of members of the Washington Map Society and anyone with an interest in maps and cartography. From 1984 to 2007, Eric W. Wolf compiled the information, from 2007 to 2017, it was done by Joel Kovarsky, from 2018 to 2023 it was done by Dr. Leah Thomas, and from 2023 onward it has been Louis Miller. The worldwide cartographic community thanks them greatly.

The two compendiums are organized from the latest date to the oldest date. To search for a name or a topic or a specific issue, type Ctrl-F for a Windows based device (Command-F for an Apple based device) which will open a small window. Then type in your search query. For a specific issue, type in the symbol # before the number, and for issues 1—9, insert a zero before the digit. For a specific year, instead of typing in that year, type in a Portolan issue in that year (a more efficient approach).
